Description
Francis Baylies. A Narrative of Major General Wool's Campaign In Mexico, In The Years 1846, 1847 & 1848. Albany: Little & Company, 1851.FIRST SEPARATE EDITION. 8vo. [1-5] 6-78 pages. Original maize printed wrappers, title within ornamental border. Frontispiece plate of John E. Wool. Housed modern quarter morocco clamshell.
The bulk of this narrative had already appeared in serial form in Strykers' American Register. This history of Wool's march from San Antonio to Buena Vista, the battle there, and Wool's activities in Mexico after the battle is based on Baylies' research into official documents, many of which he prints here, and personal interviews with Wool himself. The impetus for its publication in this form seems to have been the application of several leading New York state citizens, whose letter to Baylies soliciting his manuscript is printed along with Baylies' favorable response to their request. His work is entirely laudatory of Wool's behavior as both a military officer and a human being. He is especially complimentary of his activities at Buena Vista and during the lull after that campaign, when Wool was instrumental in restoring order to the Mexican countryside. His suppression and punishment of Mexican guerrillas is described at length, and Baylies implies strongly that it was Wool's ability to overawe his opponents that did much to accomplish that objective. The work closes with several pages describing the honors Wool received after his return to the United States.
