Description
Inscribed to Leonard Bernstein
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Where Do We Go from
Here: Chaos or Community? New York: Harper & Row,
[1967]. First edition, association copy, inscribed by the author
to Leonard Bernstein on the front free endpaper, "To Leonard
Bernstein / In appreciation for / your great support / Martin
Luther King Jr." Octavo. [xii], 209 [3, blank] pages. Publisher's
black cloth backstrip over yellow paper boards, spine lettered in
gilt and red, in original dust jacket. Spine a bit sunned and
rubbed, some edgewear to jacket a lower edge of rear jacket panel,
some rubbing to jacket, light rubbing to binding, nearly fine. A
handsome copy with an excellent association, chemised in tan
quarter-morocco slipcase.Besides being one of the most prominent composers of the latter-half of the twentieth century, Leonard Bernstein (1918-1990) was deeply committed to progressive causes and civil rights. This caused him to be blacklisted in the 1950's (although the impact on his career was negligible). In 1970, he hosted a famous gathering to raise money for legal fees for several members of the Black Panther party, which was famously satirized by Tom Wolfe in the New York Magazine article, Radical Chic: That Party at Lenny's. Despite the criticism drawn from the article, Bernstein was seen by many as truly committed to civil rights.
