Cotton Mather. Magnalia Christi Americana: Or the Ecclesiastical History of New-England, from Its First Planting in the Year 1620, unto the Year of our Lord, 1698. London: Printed for Thomas Parkhurst, 1702. First edition. Folio, printed in double columns. [32], 38, [2], 75, [1], [2], 238, [2], 125-222, 100, [2], 88, [2, blank], 118, [2] pages. Complete with engraved folding map. With both advertisement leaves, one bound at the end of the text, the other (with signature mark A6) bound before A Prefatory Poem with signature B. Without the two leaves of errata, issued after publication. Twentieth-century three-quarters brown crushed morocco over marbled boards, ruled in gilt, gilt ruled spine compartments and spine lettered in gilt. Marbled endpapers, top edge gilt, other edges trimmed."This, the most famous of Cotton Mather's works... is the most famous book produced by any American during colonial times..." (Church).

Condition: Binding rubbed with edgewear. Morocco and gilt book label of Frank C. Deering to front free endpaper recto, his bookplate laid-in. Ink ownership to verso of title page. Folding map creased along old folds, paper loss to left corner touching plate mark, not affecting map. A few short tears to textblock professionally repaired, confined to margins and not affecting text. Scattered foxing and a bit of soiling. Very good.
