Description
C. Edwards Lester. Sam Houston and his Republic. New York: Burgess, Stringer & Co., 1846.FIRST EDITION. 8vo. 208 pages. Engraved frontispiece portrait, three engraved maps. Late nineteenth-century half morocco, spine gilt-lettered, and marbled boards.
Lester writes in his preface addressed to the reader, "This Book will lose me some friends, but it will win me better ones in their places. But if it lost me all and gained me none, in God's name, as I am a free man, I would publish it. I am no man's partizan [sic], or eulogist. But I dare tell the truth to the men of my own times, and leave the men of other times to take care of my reputation. I do not ask the Reader to adopt my opinions - but I do ask him to weigh my facts. I deprecate no Critic's severity; I only say to him as the old Greek did to the man with the uplifted club - 'Strike, sir, -- but hear me first.' Let us see if any good thing can come out of Nazareth!"
Jenkins writes, "First biography of Sam Houston, in large part autobiographical. Controversial since the day of its issue, it is still one of the basic sources for information on the life of Houston."
Condition: Touch of restoration to spine ends, joints, and extremities, with a little retouching of color, hinges starting. Title-page with a little offsetting and foxing, occasional scattered foxing throughout.
