Benjamin Franklin. The Private Life of the Late Benjamin Franklin. London: Printed for J. Parsons, 1793. First edition in English. Octavo. [xiv], 324 pages. Lacking half-title. Quarter marbled pig, later green marbled paper boards, tooled and lettered in gilt to the spine.

A good copy of the first edition in English of Franklin's autobiography, first published in an unauthorized French edition in 1791. "The most widely read of all American autobiographies...this book holds the essence of the American way of life" (Grolier American).

Condition: Moderate edgewear, corners bumped and rubbed with minor loss, some scuffing to boards, head and tail pushed, loss of leather at head, joints repaired, loss of gilt to lettering piece. Text block edges trimmed, toned, top edge soiled; hinges cracked, endpapers offset from turn-ins, bookseller notation to front flyleaf recto (repaired along gutter). Foxed throughout.
