Description
[Paul Revere]. Two early American newspapers, one with a masthead engraving by Paul Revere. Includes:The Boston-Gazette, and Country Journal. No. 804. [Boston: Edes & Gill], Monday, September 3, 1770. 4 pages on two folio news sheets (approximately 15 1/4 x 9 3/8 inches; 390 x 240 mm). Revere engraved the masthead of the Boston Gazette, first used by the newspaper on January 1, 1770. Lacking one column (about one third vertically) of sheet two; other chips and tears with losses; some holes and other abrasions; unevenly toned with some pale spotting; other creases and wrinkling. See Brigham, Paul Revere's Engravings, pp. 199-201 (illustrated plate 67).
[And]: The Independent and Universal Chronicle. The Advertiser. Vol. X. No. 496. Boston: Powars and Willis, Thursday, February 19, 1778. 4 pages on two folio news sheets (approximately 15 1/2 x 10 inches; 395 x 255 mm). The masthead is after Revere's "Sword in the Hand" engraving used on colonial currency (see Brigham, Paul Revere's Engravings, p. 221, plate 75). Paper toned and spotted; area of loss at upper margin, not affecting masthead; other chips and tears with losses; creased along old folds.
Also included is a facsimile of the Ulster County Gazette from Saturday, January 4, 1800. Chips and tears, uneven toning and staining, creased and folded.
