The Third Major United States Government Expedition to the Interior of the Great Plains
[Major Stephen H. Long]. Edwin James. An Account of an
Expedition from Pittsburgh to the Rocky Mountains, performed in the
years 1819 and '20, by order of the Hon. John C.
Calhoun, Sec'y of War under the Command of Major Stephen H.
Long. Philadelphia: H. C. Carey & I. Lea, 1822-23. First
edition. Two octavo text volumes and one quarto atlas volume. Text
approximately 8.5 x 5 inches. [iv], [8], 503, [1, blank]; [vi],
442, xcviii pages. Atlas volume with the following engraved plates
or maps: two double-page maps, seven plates after Seymour, one
hand-colored plate, and one double-page chart. Atlas approximately
11.75 x 9.25 inches. Text volumes bound in contemporary tree calf,
covers ruled in gilt, spines ruled, tooled and lettered in gilt,
mottled edges, marbled endleaves. Atlas volume complete though
disbound. Text volumes with boards re-hinged, some intermittent
foxing or soiling in text, pages 269-272 in volume I trimmed a bit
close on fore-edge, page 371 in volume I missing lower corner (no
loss of text on these pages). Pages of atlas volume worn at edges
and with some tears and foxing. Overall, a good set. This
expedition was the third expedition sent by the U. S. government to
survey the Great Plains (the first two being the Lewis and Clark
Expedition and Zebulon Pike).More Information:
Long was sent to explore Yellowstone, but couldn't make it up the Missouri River. He instead crossed Kansas and Colorado.
