8 volumes in 15, including atlas volume, large 8vo. Uniformly bound in tan buckram backed in white cloth, spine with gilt titling and ornaments, each cover with inset portraits of Lewis and Clark. Printed on Imperial Japan paper. Title page printed in black and orange, illustrated with facsimile plates, portraits, views, plans, and maps. Prints by Karl Bodmer, some with tissue guards. " Each volume (both parts I and II) housed in matching tan buckram slipcases, atlas volume housed in its own slipcase.

LIMITED EDITION DE LUXE. Number 3 of 50 copies printed on Imperial Japan paper. "A selection of the plates, many of them Bodmer's 'portraits of Indians, scenes of Indian life, and... views of Western scenery... reproduced from Maximilian's Atlas' are supplied in duplicate, with the top copy hand-colored" (Beckham, Erickson, et. al.).

"This edition is notable for its thorough Introduction, covering the history of the expedition and earlier explorations, and a detailed account of the original journals and their various editions. This is followed by the comprehensive Paltsits Bibliography, which was, at the time, the definitive survey of the literature. This edition is also the first to present many ancillary materials for the first time. Perhaps most striking are the fifty-three facsimiles of original maps, mostly by Clark, covering almost every step of the route. In its maps and numerous illustrations, the Thwaites edition is an outstanding source of visual materials relating to the expedition," (Beckham, Erickson, et. al.).

"The most elaborate work on this expedition" (Howes).

Condition: Some edgewear and light soiling to all volumes; a few scattered ink stains to the spines of vol. III, part II, vol. IV, parts I and II, vol. VI, part II; spine ends pushed; a few corners bumped. An instance or two of finger-soiling, confined to the margins. Plates bright and deftly colored. Atlas volume with upper spine panel wrinkled and a little pushed; light foxing to endpapers. Light soiling to slipcases.
