Description
[Hugh Hefner].1962 Royal Empress (Serial Number 13-7351811). 19 3/4" (L) x 17 1/2" (W) x 9 1/4" (H). Black ribbon. Normal wear from use.Remembered as the controversial "leader of the sexual revolution," Hugh Hefner built an empire on previously taboo topics like sex and extravagant partying. In 1953, Hefner launched the now-iconic Playboy magazine. The first issue of Playboy (Volume 1, Number 1) - highly collectible in its own right - is included in this lot (minor dampstaining, mild wear, and a few creases). The inaugural cover features Marilyn Monroe as the magazine's first "Sweetheart of the Month" with her "Golden Dreams" nude photo inside. Following the magazine's success in the 1950s, Hefner expanded to create a world network of Playboy Clubs. The publishing mogul appeared on the cover of a number of magazines, including a 1967 edition of TIME (which accompanies the lot).
This very typewriter appears in one of the most definitive photos of Hefner. Included in the lot, this photograph captured Hefner with the typewriter. In the foreground, more than a dozen folders feature headlines such as "Abortion," "Birth Control," "Sex," "Divorce," and "Venereal Diseases" - topics on which Hefner wrote articles using this very typewriter. Acquired at auction in 2018, during which Soboroff and Hefner's daughter, Christie, developed a friendship. Accompanied by related ephemera.
