Description

[Andy Rooney]. 1929 Underwood No. 5 (Serial Number 2501299-5). 15" (L) x 11 3/4" (W) x 9" (H). Black ribbon. Normal wear from use.

Once owned by CBS television personality, Andy Rooney, this typewriter has made headlines numerous times throughout its storied life. The machine first gained national attention when Rooney featured the typewriter on "A Few Minutes with Andy Rooney," his end-of-show segment on 60 Minutes. According to TIME magazine, Rooney slammed Bill Gates "for making computers that can't compete with his typewriter. Waxing wistful for the Underwood antique on which he pecked away for half a century, he notes that he has churned through seven computers in six years. (What did he do to them?) He also slams Bill Gates' creations for being tough to shut down and for requiring him to use a password." The monologue became one of the most popular segments in the history of 60 Minutes.

In 2012, the typewriter again graced the covers of local and national newspapers when Steve Soboroff succeeded in purchasing the machine from an estate sale at Rooney's home in Norwalk, Connecticut. With the help of a well-connected neighbor, Soboroff added the Underwood Number 5 to The Collection. Given the notoriety of the typewriter, several newspapers covered the sale, ranging from the Norwalk Daily Voice to the Los Angeles Times.

The typewriter featured here is believed to be one of two used by Rooney to write his famous news segments. The other is housed in the Smithsonian Institute. Rooney's CBS luggage tag, typescript, and magazine articles are also included.

Provenance: From The Soboroff Typewriter Collection
