Description
"Magna Charta of the United American States"
[Americana]. The Constitution of the Several
Independent States of America; the Declaration of Independence; the
Articles of Confederation Between the Said States; the Treaties
Between His Most Christian Majesty and the United States of
America. Published by Order of Congress.
Philadelphia: Printed by Francis Bailey, 1781. The first
authoritative collected edition of the state constitutions of the
United States and the Articles of Confederation, one of only 200
copies printed. Octavo. [ii], 226 pages. Contemporary full
brown calf, spine ruled in gilt in compartments, five raised bands,
black gilt morocco lettering label. Rebacked, preserving the
original spine. Binding worn and soiled, hinges cracked (yet still
solid), text toned, dampstained, with a few pages creased. Worm
damage to endleaves, evidence of sticker removal from front free
endpaper (both sides), and on title-page near inner margin. With
the bookplate of Seth Davenport, Jr. (possibly the
great-grandfather of President William Howard Taft) on the front
pastedown, and the contemporary ownership signature of
"Weatherspoon '98" on the rear pastedown. A good copy of one of the
most important and rare publications of American governmental
frameworks prior to the Constitution.
More Information:
"In its review of the London edition of this work, printed in the following year, the Monthly Review says: 'It contains a greater portion of unsophisticated wisdom and good sense, than is, perhaps, to be met with any other legislative code that was ever yet framed. It is, in short, the book which may be considered the Magna Charta of the United American States.'" (Evans).
Evans 17390. Howes C716.
