Description
First Edition, Inscribed by Bill Wilson
[Alcoholics Anonymous]. [Bill Wilson]. Alcoholics
Anonymous. The Story of How Many Thousands of Men and
Women Have Recovered from Alcoholism. New York: Works
Publishing Inc., [1939]. First edition, first printing.
Presentation copy, inscribed by Alcoholics Anonymous co-founder
Bill Wilson on the front free endpaper in blue ink: "Dear John
Grant- / We have come a / long way since this / volume was printed.
/ Please have my gratitude / for all you have done / to make this
possible- / Ever Devotedly / Bill Wilson / NY / 3/15/60." Octavo.
viii, 400 pages. Publisher's red cloth titled in gilt on front
cover and spine. Some scuffing and wear to spine, some moderate
rubbing and soiling to boards, corners bumped, previous owner's
signature, "F. B. Camp. M.D. / October-1939," on front free
endpaper above Wilson's inscription. Some toning to text, edges of
text block thumbsoiled. Still, a very good copy. The recipient of
this book was most likely the man who later became the
International Coordinator of the General Service Office of
Alcoholics Anonymous."This extraordinary book deserves the careful attention of anyone interested in the problem of alcoholism. Whether as victims, friends of victims, physicians, clergymen, psychiatrists or social workers there are many such, and this book will give them, as no other treatise known to this reviewer will, an inside view of the problem which the alcoholic faces. [...] The book is not in the least sensational. It is notable for its sanity, restraint, and freedom from over-emphasis and fanaticism. It is a sober, careful, tolerant, sympathetic treatment of the alcoholic's problem and of the successful techniques by which its co-authors have won their freedom" (from the influential 1939 book review by Dr. Harry Emerson Fosdick).
