General Woll's Invasion of Texas
[Adrian Woll]. Expedicion Hecha En Tejas,
Por Una Parte De La 2.a Division Del Cuerpo De Egercito del
Norte. Monterrey: Impreso Por Francisco Molina, 1842.FIRST EDITION. 4to. [1-3] 4-60 pages. 2 folding letterpress statistical tables. Stab-sewn with thread renewed. Housed in a modern quarter morocco clamshell case.
This rare work comprises a collection of dispatches, reports, and proclamations issued by the French Mexican General, Adrian Woll, throughout his 1842 invasion of Texas in which he captured San Antonio and engaged a force of Texans at the Battle of Salado Creek. "This is an interesting account of Woll's capture of San Antonio in September, 1842, given in a collection of reports made by Woll to General Isidro Reyes, General en Gefe Ejercito del Norte, dated from August 29 to October 11, 1842. These reports tell of his march from the Rio Grande to Bejar, that is present day San Antonio, of his capture of the city on September 11, and of the engagement at Salado on of the September 18" (Streeter). The works includes a list of the 52 Texans taken prisoner (including judge, jurors, and citizens in town to attend court) while court was in session at San Antonio during the time of Woll's invasion, including James W. Robinson and Judge Hutchinson (pp. 20-21).
Collected here for the first time are many documents unavailable elsewhere, although they may have been printed at the time in Mexico. Among the more important ones known to have been printed at the time are Woll's May 2, 1842 address to his troops (Streeter 979); his August 30, 1842 address (in Streeter 978.1); his report of the Battle of San Antonio (Streeter 974); and his report of the Battle of Salado Creek (Streeter 975 and 988). His September 11, 1842, dispatch to Mexico announcing his occupation of San Antonio; his September 11, 1842, congratulatory address to his troops; his September 12, 1842, address to the conquered citizens of San Antonio; his diary of the march; the important list of Texas prisoners (including Samuel S. Maverick); and his September 16, 1842, and September 30, 1842, addresses to his troops all seem to be available only here, however. Of considerable curiosity is the method of publishing the items issued in San Antonio itself. No press is known to have been established at San Antonio at the time, and it may be that these items, which one would expect to be published, were printed on a portable Mexican Army press. In his September 12, 1842, dispatch to Mexico, he specifically asks that his proclamation to the San Antonio citizens be published (p. 28). Woll's 1842 invasion was the last time Mexico threatened Texas in any real way. The later proposed invasion of 1844 never happened, and after Mexican troops retreated across the Rio Grande following this invasion, Texas was left alone.
Condition: Apparently removed from a previous binding and now stab-sewn using modern thread. Minor light staining to title and creasing, with contemporary ink manuscript number "15" at head of title, otherwise very fine and crisp.
References: Fifty Texas Rarities 24; Graff 4731; Howes W-619; Palau 376304 (incorrectly giving date of 1852); Ramos 4683; Sabin 104992 (without examining a copy calls for a map, not present in any known copy); Streeter 989.
