Description
Amelia Earhart. 20 Hrs. 40 Min. Our Flight in The Friendship. New York: G. P. Putnam's Sons, 1928. "Author's autograph edition," limited to 150 copies, of which this is number 143, signed by the author and the publisher to the limitation page. Octavo. 374, [4, blank] pages. Sixty-one illustrations. Publisher's three-quarter maroon cloth over marbled boards, stamped in gilt. Small cloth U.S. flag (3" x 2") mounted to the front pastedown, captioned: "This Is One of The Flags Taken by Miss Earhart Across the Atlantic In the Friendship.""On a spring day in April 1928, much like any other day at Denison House, Amelia's work was interrupted by a telephone call from Hilton H. Railey on behalf of the New York publisher George Palmer Putnam about a flight that might involve some risk..." (Long). Commander Richard E. Byrd, fresh off his own jaunt over the ocean, loaned his trimotor Fokker airplane for another Trans-Atlantic flight, this time to include an American woman as a passenger. Amelia, already well-established in her local aviation scene, was a logical candidate; this book documents each step of the journey through Amelia's keen eye and daily journaling, the culmination of which cemented her place on the international stage of aviation.
Condition: Corners just bumped, minor edgewear, joints just starting, unobtrusive color restorations to joints and corners, head and foot of spine pushed, spine sunned and worn, somewhat rubbed. Peach endpapers; front hinge weak but holding, flag somewhat foxed and lightly wrinkled along the right edge, narrow paper remnant on the front pastedown from removed bookplate. Internally generally clean and tight; scattered foxing and thumbsoiling, light marginal dampstaining to the front of the text block, ink gift inscription and effaced pencil inscription to the copyright page, text block edges with minor wear and soiling. Very good.
