Description

Original Art from Alan James Robinson's Best Work

Alan James Robinson. Here is the Arctic Winter. A fabulous collection of original art done for the book of the same title, published by Hyperion in 1993.

Included are twelve stunning large watercolors of arctic animals in a nighttime setting, each signed by Robinson and presented in a custom window mat. Size varies, but images are generally 20 x 12 inches on 24 x 18-inch sheets. In addition, there are eleven large pencil concept drawings, generally measuring 8 x 12 inches on 18 x 24-inch sheets, each presented in an archival blue paper folder.

The watercolors are laid into a custom clamshell box with a paper spine label, done with hand calligraphy. The pencil drawings are laid into a twin box with an additional hand-done label.

Robinson's genius is readily on display here, with each scene glowing with life, shining forth from an ink-black arctic night. Robinson considered this the best work he had done. The work was on the short list for a 1994 Caldecott Medal. A unique presentation, custom-created by Robinson for the original owner. A wonderful collection, and perhaps one of the most important works by Robinson, a founder, artist, and designer for the Cheloniidae Press.
