[U. S. Constitution]. The Columbian Magazine, September, 1787 - Earliest Known Magazine Printing of the Constitution. Philadelphia: Printed for Seddon, Spotswood, Cist, and Trenchard, 1787. First edition. Octavo (7.75 x 5 inches; 197 x 127 mm). [612]-674 pages. Meteorological plate, fold-out illustration of "A View of the Natural Bridge in Virginia" and one other illustration. Bound in a modern attractive laid paper over boards binding with titles printed in black on the spine. Toning to pages with light to moderate foxing throughout and numerous contemporary marginal notes and underling in pencil. With the small book label of a previous owner mounted to the front pastedown. Still, very good and quite scarce.The Columbian Magazine was among the first truly successful American magazines. The first issue was published in September, 1786 (though Sabin indicates November) and the magazine survived, with difficulty until 1792. This issue is particularly noteworthy in that it may be the first magazine publication of the first form of the Federal Constitution of September 17, 1787 listed on the contents page under the running title "The new Plan for a Foederal [sic] Government" but with no preliminary title or introduction whatever, beginning on page 659, "WE, the People of the United States...."
