[Mormon Church]. [Joseph Smith]. The Book of Mormon. Translated by Joseph Smith, Jr. Nauvoo, Ill.: Printed by Robinson and Smith, 1840. Third edition, "Carefully Revised by the Translator," first state, with testimony of the three witnesses on page [572], testimony of the eight witnesses on page [573], the unbroken "e" in "spake" on page 9, line 23, and a slightly smaller text block. Twelvemo (5.625 x 3.375 inches; 143 x 86 mm.). [4], [7]-571, [2, testimonies], [5, blank] pages. Portrait frontispiece. Contemporary plain sheep, spine lettered in gilt; all text block edges trimmed; possibly later endpapers. Binding worn, with loss to spine ends (particularly head of spine) and fair amount of loss to surface of leather, most pronounced at spine, somewhat less so at boards; edge wear resulting in boards showing through at corners. Mild soiling to endpapers. Text block softly browned, particularly at edges and title-leaf, which is also softly creased with slight loss at corners; frontispiece trimmed and affixed to verso of supplied flyleaf, contemporary to endpapers; some mild soiling and a few specks of staining to text block edges; occasional faint spot of foxing or subtle stain scattered throughout interior; some creasing to page corners. Very good, given the likely much-loved nature of this item. Crawley 83; Flake and Draper 597.
