Description

The First Edition of Marshall's Landmark Life of George Washington

[George Washington, subject]. John Marshall. The Life of George Washington, Commander in Chief of the American forces, during the war which established the independence of his country, and first President of the United States. Compiled under the inspection of the Honourable Bushrod Washington, from original papers bequeathed to him by his deceased relative, and now in possession of the author. To which is prefixed, an introduction, containing a compendious view of the colonies planted by the English on the continent of North America, from their settlement to the commencement of that war which terminated in their independence. By John Marshall. Philadelphia: Printed and published by C.P. Wayne, 1804-1807. First edition. Five octavo volumes and quarto atlas volume. [2], xxii, 488, 45, [1, blank]; viii, 560, 72; viii, 580, 28; viii, 626, [2], 16; vii, [1, blank], 779, [1, blank], 36 pages. Frontispiece portrait in Volume I. Ten mounted folding engraved maps and plans in atlas, as well as twenty-two pages of subscriber's names. With all of the blanks in text volumes. Text volumes bound in contemporary full tree calf, spines ruled and tooled in gilt, burgundy gilt morocco lettering labels. Bindings worn and chipped, with three volumes lacking spine labels (one spine label is laid-in), joints cracking or worn, most hinges starting, text toned and foxed to varying degrees, some occasional soiling. Quarto map volume is bound to style in later mottled calf over marbled boards (paper on boards appears to be re-used from old text leaves of an unknown volume and a marble design imposed over them). Spine ruled in gilt. Binding worn, joints cracking, some moderate foxing, soiling to maps, one map with some insect damage, one map trimmed a bit close, with some loss of marginal text, a few repairs or reinforcements to some maps. One leaf of subscriber's names damaged at upper margin (no loss of text). Still, this is a good copy of a very important set of American history, rare to find complete.

More Information:

"After the able, accurate, and comprehensive work of Chief Justice Marshall, it would be presumptuous to attempt a historical biography of Washington". (Sparks, Washington, volume I, as quoted by Sabin). Marshall's history of the colonies was omitted from later American editions of this classic biography of Washington.
