Description
[Charles Maturin.] Melmoth the Wanderer: A Tale. Edinburgh: Printed for Archibald Constable and Company, 1820. Four volumes. First edition. Large 12mo. v-xii, 341; [2], 321; [2], 368; [2], 453 pages. Lacking half-titles in all volumes and the single ad leaf at the end of vol. IV. Later half straight-grained red morocco over marbled boards, all edges trimmed and speckled red, green endpapers.A very good set of this influential Gothic romance, credited with raising the genre in its macabre elements. "In a satanic bargain, Melmoth exchanges his soul for immortality. The story of his tortured wanderings through the centuries is pieced together by those he implored to take over his pact with the devil" (summary from a later edition).
Condition: Moderate edgewear, corners bumped and rubbed, boards scuffed, some staining from leather, joints worn, spines sunned on vol. III and IV. Text block edges toned, top edge soiled; hinges cracked or starting, bookplate of Letitia Sadleir to front pastedown of each volume, bookplate of David and Lulu Borowitz to front flyleaf verso of vol. I, bookseller notations to initial blank in vol. I, endpapers somewhat offset from turn-ins. Intermittent foxing and thumbing throughout, a few fore-edge tears just touching text, some corners creased, loss of lower corner to page 315/316 of vol. II not affecting text.
