Description
[Anthony Finley]. New American Atlas. Philadelphia: Published by Anthony Finley, 1826. First edition, pocket issue. Twelvemo (6.125 x 4.5 inches; 156 x 113 mm. binding). [1] leaf and fifteen numbered, hand-colored folding maps tipped to fourteen guarded leaves; index and population chart tipped to pastedowns. Two continent and twelve country, region and state maps, engraved by J. H. Young after D. H. Vance (and possibly others, unnamed), dated 1825 to 1826, one undated. Straight-grained wallet-style red roan; flap lined with green roan; outer side of flap lettered in gilt. Binding darkened and worn; band to secure flap broken; layers of roan beginning to separate at edges; some loss to roan at spine; boards beginning to split away at joints; fore-edge strip coming up at bottom. Edges of text block worn, browned. First leaf, first and thirteenth/fourteenth maps detached and laid in. Numerous maps slightly toned at creases, mildly edge-worn; some beginning to split along folds and at corners, a few short tears; occasional small brown splashes, spots of foxing; some of added color bleeding through to rectos of maps, especially green and pink. Cloth reinforcements added to New York and South American map. Moderate amount of chipping at western Maine on state map. Very good, despite fragile nature.Without title-page, as issued. Maps printed on thin (occasionally described as onion-skin) paper to minimize the thickness of the volume with all maps folded. United States map engraved with the note: "The publisher is indebted to the politeness of Major S. H. Long for the use of his documents in the construction of that portion of this Map west of the Mississippi river." Includes a diagram of the "Comparative Elevation of the Principal Mountains Cities &c. in North & South America," marking which of these are active volcanoes. Tooley, p. 211; Howes F140 (for folio edition, published simultaneously).
