North Atlantic Region

[Abraham Ortelius]. Map: "SEPTENTRIONALIUM REGIONUM DESCRIP." (Northern Region Described). [Antwerp, circa 1570-1587]. Originally published as part of Abraham Ortelius' Theatrum Orbis Terrarum. Several states of this map are known. 19 x 14 inches. Framed and matted under glass to an overall size of 26 x 21.5 inches. Hand-colored and featuring sea monster and sailing ship vignettes. Very good condition. Important early map of the North Atlantic, extending from Scandinavia and the Polar regions in the East, to the North Atlantic, Greenland, Iceland and North America. Originally engraved by Frans Hogenberg, Ortelius' map of the North Atlantic is one of the most interesting maps to appear in atlas. The map was influential in its treatment of the Arctic regions. The mainland of America is depicted in the north-west with the place name "Estotilant". The map includes a number of mythical islands, including Frisland, Drogeo and Icaria. Van Den Broecke 160.
