Description
YUNG WING - 1854.
Distinguished as the first Chinese-born student to earn a degree in America, Yung Wing completed his studies at Yale in 1854. After graduation, he returned to the Far East only to flee back to the West toward the end of the century. His teachings and advances in education in New England (especially in language) are considered hallmark achievements. This offered single-sheet (6 1/2" x 7 1/4") was evidently provided for one of his admirers. It is especially noteworthy because he scribed it the year he graduated. In Chinese characters (and then translated to English) he's advised "A great man never loses the heart he had when a child - Truth & Simplicity. Yours truly Yung Wing Yale College Aug. 3rd 1854." The signature and script are 9-10 throughout, and the medium is about EX+ with very minor evidence on the reverse of album mount.
