Description

World War II Autograph Postcard from a Prisoner at Auschwitz Concentration Camp. Two pages, 6" x 4", Auschwitz; [date illegible]. Addressed to a Frau Genawefa. In brief letter, written in German, a man writes home to tell the recipient that he is healthy. On the front of the postcard, the rules of the camp are printed in German, restricting how often the prisoners can receive letters and how long they can be. A translation reads in part: "Concentration Camp Auschwitz...The letters to the prisoners must be legibly written in ink and may contain only two pages, each 15 lines...Packages can not be sent, as everything can be bought in the camp...Dismissal applications to the camp management are futile. Visitor's permits and visits to detention centers in the concentration camp are not permitted in principle. The Camp Commander." With two red censor stamps on the postcard reading "Checked 9 K.L. [Concentration Camp] Auschwitz" and another red stamp prohibiting more than one letter a month.

The notorious Auschwitz camp was a complex of over 40 extermination and concentration camps operated by the Nazis in occupied Poland from May 1940 to January 1945. Inmates consisted of Jews, Poles, Romani, Soviets, and others deemed undeserving by the Nazis. Of the approximately 1.3 million people who were sent to Auschwitz, it is estimated that 1.1 million died.

Condition: Moderate wear, toning, and soiling. Bumped corners and flattened fold. Light chipping along edges, and pencil markings on front.
