Description

Woodrow Wilson Autograph Letter Signed. Two pages of a bifolium, 5" x 8". Princeton, December 15, 1900 A letter to a Miss Mary Hillard written by Wilson, then a Professor of Jurisprudence and Political Economy at Princeton University. Wilson conveys his thanks in response to what probably was a compliment for a recent public lecture or publication. In part: "...Evidently you don't know how seldom such things as your note contains are said. If I am to judge by my own experience, both lecturers and writers are ordinarily allowed to go through life quite ignorant of what effect their work has had upon the people they are most constantly praying that they may reach and get a hold upon. They are fellows of very sensitive stuff generally, and need the heartening such encouragement gives. But they don't get it,-and are like artists who can never know the effect or validity of their art..." Signed in full, "Woodrow Wilson."

This gracious letter may have been written to Mary Robbins Hillard (1863-1932) an educator who served as headmistress at Saint Margaret's School in Waterbury, Connecticut, and later president of the Westover School in Middlebury, Connecticut, from 1909-1932.

Wilson was giving many public lectures and actively publishing around the time of this letter. From the early 1890s to the time he assumed the presidency of Princeton in 1902, Wilson had published nine books, including a biography of George Washington in 1896, and thirty-five articles. From the Estate of Malcolm S. Forbes.

Condition: The letter has two horizontal folds, but otherwise is in fine condition.
