Description

William Penn, Sr. Signed Naval Pay Warrant. One page, 7 5/8 x 10 1/2 inches; "Navy Office;" April 10, 1665 (?). A pay warrant addressed to William Sheldon, Clerk of the Cheque at Woolwich Dockyard, issued by command of James, Duke of York and Lord High Admiral of England. Sheldon is ordered to issue a payment to Ralph Collard, boatswain of the ship Kent for "actuals and wages" for himself and a servant. Signed at the conclusion, "Wm Penn." Also signed by Peter Pett.

We cannot confirm the exact year as the last number is unclear, however an invoice from 1904 issued by a London book dealer lists the year as 1665. In April 1665, the Kent would have been preparing to participate in the Battle of Lowestoft which occurred on June 13, 1665. Lowestoft was a significant engagement during the Second Anglo-Dutch War, where the English fleet, commanded by James, Duke of York, defeated the Dutch fleet under the command of Jacob van Wassenaer Obdam.

Sir William Penn Sr. was a prominent English admiral and naval commander, best known as the father of William Penn, founder of Pennsylvania. Born on April 23, 1621, in Bristol, England, Penn embarked on a distinguished naval career that significantly impacted the British Navy during the mid-17th century. He was a captain of the fleet at the Battle of Lowestoft in 1665.
