Description

William H. Taft Autograph Letter Signed "Bill". One page on his personal letterhead, 8" x 10.5", "Ritz Carlton Hotel / Montreal / July 3rd 1921." A letter to his close friend and Yale classmate Clarence Kelsey sending news of his recent confirmation as Supreme Court Chief Justice. In part: "It has come more quickly that I supposed it would and the confirmation without reference to a committee was quite unexpected and gratifying. If you had to have opposition whose would you rather have than Borah's, Johnson's, Lafollete's and Tom Watson's. They make a pleasant quartette..."

President Warren Harding named Taft on June 20, 1921 to replace Edward Douglass White. He was confirmed by the Senate the very same day, 61 in favor, and only 4 objections. He was sworn in on July 11, and to date is the only person to serve both as president and chief justice. Ex. Estate of Malcolm S. Forbes.

Condition: Flattened folds, with stray ink stains. Light age-toning.
