Description

Warren Buffett check issuing payment of $1 with transmittal letter noting: "this is more money than we have paid to any consultant in the history of Berkshire Hathaway"

Warren E. Buffett Check Engrossed and Signed in his Hand with Transmittal TLS. A check (7 1/2 x 2 1/4 inches) drawn on the US Bank, dated June 30, 2003 engrossed entirely in his hand and signed, "Warren E Buffett." The check is made out in the amount of $1 to philanthropist George W. Brumley III. Together with a one-page transmittal letter on Berkshire Hathaway letterhead, 8 x 10 1/2 inches (sight), Omaha, Nebraska; June 30, 2003.

Dated just nineteen days before Brumley's untimely death, Buffett thanks Brumley for his consulting services and humorously notes that he is paying him more than "any consultant in the history of Berkshire Hathaway." In full:

"As you so subtlety suggested, I'm enclosing my check to purchase the name of Re Re. You may think the proffered sum is inadequate, but consider the fact that this is more money than we have paid to any consultant in the history of Berkshire Hathaway. Besides, with your compounding rate, the final number will appear quite generous. Your report was excellent. We may not totally agree on valuation, but your analysis of what we're trying to do is right on the mark." Signed, "Warren."

Both pieces are matted and framed to an overall size of 16 1/2 x 22 1/2 inches.

Buffett held a close relationship with the Brumley family, having attended college with George W. Brumley's uncle, who later served as the best man at Buffett's wedding. Brumley, then CEO of Oak Value Capital Management, met Buffett in person during the Berkshire Hathaway annual meeting on April 28, 2001. He was a significant investor in Berkshire Hathaway, which by 2003 constituted 10% of Oak Value's portfolio-its largest single holding. Tragically, Brumley died in a plane crash on July 19, 2003 near Nairobi, Kenya. Buffett described the incident as "an almost unimaginable tragedy."

Condition: Not examined outside of frame. Lightly toned with smoothed folds.
