Description
Buffett ALS with humorous annotation signaling the "B-H investing philosophy"
Warren Buffett Autograph Letter Signed with Annotated
Cartoon. One page, 6 x 8 inches, Omaha; April 25, 1989. On
printed stationery featuring a Gary Larson "Far Side" cartoon of
lemmings leaping into the ocean. Writing to George William Brumley,
Jr. and his wife, Jean, Buffett thanks them for sending a Coca-Cola
sign to display in the Berkshire-Hathaway meeting room. The letter
is affixed to a Coca-Cola poster and matted to an overall size of
16 x 20 inches. It reads, in full:"The Coca-Cola sign is terrific & is now attached to the wall pointing directly at our cooler. On June 1, the Chairman & President of Coke will be coming & I am looking forward to the expression on their faces when they see it. I'm glad you could make the meeting & hope you'll be able to attend in the future; who knows what we'll buy next to surprise you."
Signed at the conclusion, "Warren." Buffett draws an arrow pointing to a lone lemming wearing an inner-tube, adding the caption: "B-H investing philosophy."
The letter was written shortly after Buffett made what became one of the most iconic investments of his career. Following the 1987 market crash, he purchased a billion dollars' worth of Coca-Cola stock, convinced that the company's global brand recognition and competitive strength made it an ideal long-term holding. The investment became one of the most successful in Berkshire Hathaway's history and remains a frequently cited example of Buffett's principle of buying stock in high-quality businesses and holding them for decades.
Although Buffett autograph material frequently appears on the market, and continues to increase in value and demand, this is the first ALS by him to appear on the market.
Condition: Lightly toned with smoothed folds. Affixed with adhesive to Coca-Cola poster. Slight mat burn and a light paperclip stain at the top edge. Poster is affixed to the mat with tape at the top edge only; three holes punched at the right edge.
