Written to his wife Alvira "Allie" Sullivan, this letter offers a warm glimpse into the Wild West lawman's close relationship with his third wife. Earp shares mundane yet endearing farm updates with Allie, who was away visiting the Murvin family, and focuses on the prospect of new calves, kittens, and chicks. Perhaps most known for instigating the infamous shootout between law enforcement and cowboy outlaws at the O.K. Corral, Virgil Earp boasted a career as impressive as his arguably more famous brother, Wyatt. Virgil served as a key member of the Earp gang and later held sanctioned police positions such as town constable, deputy U.S. marshal, and city marshal in the silver-mining boomtown of Tombstone, Arizona. It was there that Earp survived an assassination attempt by friends of the outlaws slain at the O.K. Corral. Alive but severely maimed, Earp moved his family to California and later, Prescott, Arizona, where he penned this letter.
Earp met Allie Sullivan during his brief stint in Council Bluffs, Iowa, in 1874. Earp had been married twice before meeting Sullivan. Though it is unclear whether they ever officially married, they remained together for the rest of Earp's life.
