Description
Zachary Taylor Military Appointment Signed "Z. Taylor" as president and countersigned by War Secretary George Crawford. One partially-printed vellum page, 13.5" x 17.75", "City of Washington," March 20, 1850, appointing William A. Hammond assistant surgeon. The document has smoothed folds and some stains. A blind-embossed paper seal exists along the left margin. Taylor's signature is bold and clear.William Hammond graduated from the University of the City of New York in 1848 and entered the US Army the next year. After receiving this military appointment in 1850 as an assistant surgeon, the 1st lieutenant served until resigning in 1860 to become a professor of anatomy at the University of Maryland. When the Civil War began the following year, the doctor rejoined the army, again as an assistant surgeon. In 1862 President Lincoln appointed the thirty-four-year-old as the 11th Surgeon General of the US Army with a rank of brigadier general. In that office, Hammond successfully implemented a number of needed reforms, but in 1863 he was removed and court-martialed under somewhat mysterious circumstances. In 1878, the doctor was restored to the army with his rank of brigadier general and allowed to retire.
Also included with the military appointment is Hammond's 1872 partly-printed certificate for the Society of Arts and Sciences (one page, 22" x 17"). With tears to edges (resulting in minor loss of paper) and loss of paper in the center of the document. Separation along folds with tape repairs on verso. Minor soiling.
