Description
Zachary Taylor Letter Signed "Z. Taylor Col. 1st Regt., U.S. Infy". Two pages, 7.75" x 9.75", Fort Crawford, Wisconsin; June 18, 1833. In a letter to Col. Roger Jones, Adj. General, Taylor reports on the status of newly arrived recruits who are suffering from a cholera outbreak. Written in an unknown hand, the letter reads, in part:"On the 28th ulto, 91 recruits under the command of Capt. Hawkins of the 7th Infy. reached here for this post, & Fort Snelling, having from the time they reached New Orleans to this place lost by death owing to the cholera breaking out among them, desertions & left on the way sick, sixty out of one hundred & fifty one, the number which left the principal depot at New Clark. From the statement of Dr. Harris who accompanied them as Surgeon, the disease may be attributed in a great measure to the want of proper accommodations on board the Steam Boat which brought them to St. Louis the weather being excessively hot when they left N. Orleans, and the recruits so crowded together that there was bare room sufficient for them to turn round on the space that was assigned them on the Boat, when they arrived, they were mostly convalescent, but as most of them had been afflicted with cholera, or the premonitory symptoms they were very much reduced, & of course looked miserably...I had them removed immediately on their arrival across the Mississippi...it will be some time before a large number of them recover their former strength and appearance, of course they add but little for the present, to the efficiency of the garrison." Taylor has signed the report at the bottom. The letter has docketing on verso.
Zachary Taylor oversaw the construction of the second version of Fort Crawford, which was finished in 1835. The fort took six years to build, due to poor federal funding and delays in materials.
Condition: Flattened mail folds, with some small separations at the edges of folds. Minor foxing and some light toning around the margins. Overall Good.
