Description

William Henry Harrison Document Signed. One page, 7 3/8 x 2 1/2 inches with irregular margins; Greeneville [sic], [Ohio]; August 10, 1795. A requisition order dated just one week after the signing of the Treaty of Greenville. The document reads in full: "For the Delawares four hundred & nineteen pounds of beef and flour - and Two Hundred & seventy one glls [gallons] of whiskey." Signed, "Wm. H. Harrison," as aide de camp.

The Treaty of Greenville formally ended the Northwest Indian War (1785-1795). Under the terms of the treaty, various Indigenous nations, including the Delaware, agreed to cede substantial tracts of land in exchange for annual goods and supplies from the United States. This requisition was likely an implementation of this agreement.

Condition: Document is torn from a larger sheet, with the top margin just touching text. Flattened folds, minor toning, and a few scattered stains. Minor wear with a small chip to left margin. Small hole about center, just touching text. Ink blotch at center, affecting text but not legibility. Prior mounting remnants and pencil notation on the verso.
