William Henry Harrison Requests Paper and Ink for His Garrison

William Henry Harrison Autograph Document Signed ("Wm H Harrison"). One page, 3 3/4 x 6 1/4 inches; Fort Washington; October 21, 1797. With recipient's docket on the verso.

An early military document signed by William Henry Harrison while serving as Captain, authorizing the issuance of a quire of writing paper and a paper of black ink powder for the use of the garrison at Fort Washington.

At the time of this document, Harrison was a young officer in the United States Army on the northwestern frontier, stationed at the key post at present day Cincinnati. His service during this period placed him within the ongoing effort to secure the Northwest Territory following the conflicts of the 1790s. He would soon rise to prominence as Governor of the Indiana Territory, a hero of the War of 1812, and ultimately as the ninth President of the United States.

Manuscripts from Harrison's early army career are scarce, particularly those reflecting the routine logistical needs of frontier service. The present order offers a tangible glimpse into the daily administration of a remote garrison and the formative career of a future president.

Condition: Fine. Light toning and horizontal creasing. Very handsome and attractive early signature.
