Ulysses S. Grant Signed Appointment. One partially printed page, 20 7/8 x 16 inches; Washington [D.C.]; January 26, 1875. Document appointing Joseph R. Lewis "Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Washington Territory...for the term of four years..." Signed, "U.S. Grant" as President and countersigned by Hamilton Fish as Secretary of State. Embossed white paper seal at left. Docketed on verso.

Joseph R. Lewis (1829-1903) was a distinguished American jurist who served in various judicial capacities across multiple U.S. territories during the late 19th century. Beginning in 1869, Lewis would be appointed Associate Justice of the Supreme Court for Idaho Territory, New Mexico Territory in 1871, and Washington Territory in 1872 before being appointed Chief Justice in 1875. After serving four years, he returned to practicing law in Seattle until retiring in 1892.

Condition: Flattened folds with minor ink offsetting from being folded. Small tape reinforcement on verso at center intersection of center vertical fold. Some minor areas of darkening to edges, with a tiny chip at bottom center edge and pencil notation at bottom left corner of recto. Small areas of old mount remnants at bottom right margin of recto, and on docket panel. Embossed seal fully intact and in excellent condition.
