Description

Ulysses S. Grant Signature. One page of a bifolium, 4.25" x 5.5", Boston; April 1871. The printed card reads "Autograph / Presented to the French Fair / With the compliments of", below which Grant has signed, "U. S. Grant." Accompanied by a typed letter of provenance addressed to Mary A. Benjamin of Walter R. Benjamin Autographs in 1951, inquiring about the signature.

The French Fair was held at the Boston Theatre in Boston, Massachusetts, to help aid the sufferers from the war in France. It raised money for those in need, but it helped strengthen the bond between America and France while raising awareness to situations at home and abroad. "To recognize in some slight way the debt that we owe to France, as handed down by our traditions. . . .and kindness with which Americans are always treated within her borders. . . .That the generous gift thus made by the united efforts of many has carried real sympathy, as well as material aid, to those who greatly need them both, is our hope and our firm belief." [Report of the Executive Committee of the Fair for Relief of Suffering in France. Boston: Press of Rand, Avery, & Co., 1872, pages 9-10]. President Grant's signature presented to the French Fair represents America's continuing strive for global peace and brotherhood.
