Description

Ulysses S. Grant Document Signed as Secretary of War. One partly printed page, 8 x 10 inches, Washington; October 31, 1867. An appointment issued to Medal of Honor winner Isaac. S. Catlin. The document reads, in part, "the President of the United States has appointed you for gallant and meritorious services at Petersburg, Va., a Lieutenant Colonel by Brevet..." Signed, "U. S. Grant."

During the Civil War, Catlin served as Colonel in the 109th New York. He received the Medal of Honor for his heroic attempts to rally disorganized troops at Petersburg on July 30, 1864. He was wounded and had his right leg amputated.

Grant served as acting Secretary of War for a brief five months from August 1867 until January 1868, when Congress reinstated Edwin Stanton. Documents signed as Secretary of War are the scarcest format for Grant.

Condition: Dampstaining and soiling but remains presentable. Tiny chips of paper loss along left and top edges. Two tape repairs along top fold on verso at margins. Signature and engrossment have faded but remain legible.
