Description
General Grant prepares to protect Kossuth, Mississippi
Ulysses S. Grant Autograph Letter Signed. One ruled page of a bifolium, 7.75" x 9.75", "Head Quarters, Dist[rict] of West Ten[nessee], Corinth," September 5, 1862. In this letter, General Grant orders Major General Edward O. C. Ord, the commanding general in Corinth, to send infantry and cavalry troops to Kossuth, Mississippi, to reinforce General William Rosencrans. Mostly clean paper; some soiling on the docketing panel. The full text of the body of the letter reads:"To cover our present movement of troops from the front I deem it advisable to occupy Kossuth for a few days. For that purpose Gen. Rosencrans will have one Regiment there by the 7th. I wish you to reinforce them by a regiment of Infantry and Squadron of Cavalry from your command. The troops should take five days rations with them which will keep them as long as they will probably be kept out. Respectably &c [signed] U. S. Grant Maj. Gen."
Docketing on the address panel reads, "Head Quarters Dept. of West Tenn. Sept. 5th, 1862. Orders to reinforce Gen'l Rosecran to Regmt with 1 Regt Infty & 1 Squadron of Cavalry. Genl. McArthur ordered to furnish the Regmt. Inftry & Genl. Davis the Squadron Cavalry to start in the morning early. Maj. Gen. U. S. Grant."
Earlier in April 1862, Grant and his Army of the Tennessee performed poorly at the bloody Battle of Shiloh. Accusations arose that he had been drunk or just incapable. General Henry Halleck, the senior Union Army commander of the Western Theater, even relieved Grant from command of his army. President Lincoln, though, had become impressed with Grant, stating after that battle, "I can't spare this man; he fights." The president then reinstated Grant to his previous command. By the time this letter was written, Grant commanded the Army of the Tennessee and General Rosecrans' Army of the Mississippi, making a total force of about 100,000. General Ord's men and General Rosecran's men were guarding railroad lines and supplies near Corinth, Mississippi, from the developing threat of Confederate General's Sterling Price and Braxton Bragg. Two weeks after penning this order, Rosecrans and Price met on the battlefield at Iuka, Mississippi, resulting in Price's retreat.
