Grant Accepts His Appointment as Brigadier General
Ulysses S. Grant Autograph Docket Signed. One page, 3.5" x 3.25". Just five months after assuming the office of president, Abraham Lincoln wrote a letter (July 30, 1861) to Secretary of War Simon Cameron asking for nominations for ten men to be appointed as brigadier generals of volunteers. Among the names was Col. Ulysses S. Grant. Accomplished entirely in his hand, Grant places his docket, which has been removed from his retained copy of the letter accepting his appointment, in full: "Jefferson City Mo / August 25th 1861 / Brig. Gen. U.S. Grant / U.S.V. / Accepting apt. / August 7. 61." Surrounded by mat burn, the paper is lightly soiled near the left edge. Mounting remnants on the verso. With a 7.75" x 10.25" engraved portrait of Grant. After graduating from West Point in 1843 and serving in the Mexican War, Ulysses S. Grant resigned from the army in 1854. The beginning of the Civil War found him struggling to make ends meet in his father's tannery in Galena, Illinois. He soon began recruiting and training Illinois volunteers and was quickly promoted to colonel in command of the rowdy 21st Illinois Volunteer Infantry Regiment. Following his appointment to brigadier general, Grant impressed Lincoln with his willingness to fight in his victories at the Battles of Belmont, Fort Henry, and Fort Donelson (which led to his appointment as major general of volunteers). Lincoln's regard for Grant as a general multiplied throughout the war, eventually leading to Lincoln appointing the former tanner Commanding General of the Army in 1864.Auction Info
