Twelve Letters to Amon G. Carter. Group lot comprising twelve letters addressed to Fort Worth philanthropist and publisher of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Amon G. Carter, from seven U.S. Presidents (Herbert Hoover, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry S. Truman, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Lyndon B. Johnson, Richard Nixon, Gerald R. Ford), as well as Claudia "Lady Bird" Johnson and FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover. These heartfelt personal letters thank Carter for his enduring friendship and longstanding record of public service, including one letter from Lyndon B. Johnson dated just two weeks after John F. Kennedy's assassination. Each is one page in length, dated January 28, 1931 to April 28, 1976. Includes:Herbert Hoover TLS. One page of a bifolium, 7 x 9 inches, Washington; January 28, 1931. In part: "It was a pleasure to pick up the newspaper this morning and discover that the Fort Worth Star-Telegram had received the same kind of national recognition that it has had for so many years in Texas. I know how proud you must be of the Associated Press citation and I can only say that it was a citation well merited." Signed, "Lyndon" as the Democratic Leader of the Senate. J. Edgar Hoover TLS. One page, 7 x 9 1/2 inches, Washington; January 2, 1960. In part: "How typically thoughtful of you to remember me at Christmastime with the delicious Texas grapefruit...Being remembered by friends means so much to me and it is particularly heartwarming during this special season." Signed, "Edgar" as Director of the FBI. Includes original transmittal cover.
Richard Nixon TLS. One page, 8 x 10 1/2 inches, Washington; December 31, 1960. In part: "I would like to express in this letter what I intended to say to your personally if you had been able to be with us - my grateful and lasting appreciation for all that you did in the campaign. Failing to carry Texas naturally a disappointment but Fort Worth came through superbly and I know this would not have been possible without the strong editorial support which was given us by the Fort Worth Star Telegram..." Lyndon B. Johnson TLS. One page, 7 x 9 inches, Washington; November 16, 1962. In part: "Thanks so much for sending me...your reprint of the Laredo Times Editorial. I am glad I have some friends left in Fort Worth...I hope you will also help with my other friends there who want to put a stop to this unnecessary scandalizing of me that has gone on for a good many months now without any answer." Gerald R. Ford TLS. One page, 7 x 10 1/2 inches, Washington; April 28, 1976. In part: "I want to thank you for the recent editorial endorsement by the Fort Worth Star-Telegram of me in the Texas primary. Believe me, every day I'm in the Oval Office I realize the difference between rhetoric and the realities you point out of dealing with real problems in the real world of Washington politics..." Signed, "Jerry Ford" as President. With postscript in Ford's hand: "P. S. How's your golf? J," and a single autograph correction in the address line, changing "Mr. Carter" to "Amon." Includes original transmittal cover.
Condition: Overall, very good. Smoothed mailing folds, light toning, and occasional paperclip impressions or staple holes.
