Three President Signed Proposal for a Perle Mesta Commemorative Stamp: Richard Nixon, Jimmy Carter, and Gerald R. Ford. One page, 7.25" x 10.5", n.d. (ca. 1980s), on "State of Oklahoma Office of the Governor [George Nigh]" letterhead. Very fine.

More Information:

This "Proposal for a stamp to honor Perle Mesta; Patriot, Diplomat, Philanthropist" reads in part: "We the undersigned and other members of our distinguished committee . . . respectfully request the Citizens' Advisory Stamp Committee to further consider the issuance of a commemorative stamp in her honor." The proposal is also signed by Oklahoma Governor George Nigh, Speaker Carl Albert, and Chairman Ben K. West. Mesta (1889-1975) was a U.S. ambassador to Luxembourg and a well-known political hostess. She was the daughter of a wealthy Oklahoma oilman. Also included is an endorsement of the Perle Mesta commemorative stamp signed by Preston Robert Tisch and dated February 25, 1986. Also, a one page recommendation to the U.S. Postal Service Citizens Stamp Advisory Committee dated August 8, 1986, and signed by Chairman Ben West.
