Description

Thomas Jefferson Signed Scallop Top Ship's Passport. One partially printed page, 10.25" x 15.25", New York; July 15, 1807. Marked no. 188 and signed "Th. Jefferson", the document grants the schooner Clarissa and its commander "Samuel Henshaw...of the burthen of ninety nine 84/95 tons or thereabouts, mounted with no guns, navigated with Eight men. TO PASS with her Company, Passengers, Goods and Merchandize without any hinderance [sic], seizure or molestation..." Countersigned by James Madison as Secretary of State, with a blind embossed seal at the lower left corner. Decorated with two beautiful marine vignettes at top. The document is framed, along with portraits of Jefferson and Madison, measuring 22" x 22.5" overall.

Condition: Flattened folds, with creasing around the seal, and light toning at edges and throughout. Jefferson's signature has faded slightly. The bottom edge of the document is slightly uneven. Overall very fine.
