Description

Thomas Jefferson Signed Four Languages Ship's Paper. Single sheet, 19.75" x 16" (sight); New York; December 4, 1806. This passport, printed in English, French, Spanish, and Dutch authorizes passage of "Henry L. DeKoven master or commander of the ship called the Bengal of the burthen of 506 tons or thereabouts... bound for Buenos Ayres and layden with iron, naval stores, fish, flour, bread, tobacco, snuff, sugars, [illegible], liquors, groceries, & lumber." Countersigned by James Madison as Secretary of State. With two blind embossed seals at left. Matted and framed to the overall size of 27.5" x 23.75".

Condition: Stray foxing and staining. There is evidence of restoration along central vertical fold and horizontal fold, with a bit of paper loss along top of vertical fold. Slight dings to corners of frames.
