Description

Thomas Jefferson Naval Appointment Signed "Th: Jefferson." One partially-printed vellum page, 12.5" x 16.5" (sight), Washington, February 13, 1809, appointing "Jaqueline B. Harvie . . . a Lieutenant in the Navy." Countersigned by Robert Smith as secretary of the navy. Seal of the Department of the Navy in the middle of the lower edge.

The document has been examined out of the mat. It measures 14" x 17", and is held in place at top by black and white ribbon (as seen in image); the bottom is mounted with the use paper-corners, allowing the document to be removed completely from matting. Slight discoloration along edges, with areas of light soiling throughout. Jefferson's signature is large and bold. Matted with an oval portrait of Jefferson to an overall size of 30.75" x 25.5".

Lt. Harvie enlisted in the navy as a midshipman in 1804 and resigned in April 1812, just two months before the beginning of the War of 1812.
