Thomas Jefferson Four Language Ship's Paper Signed "Th: Jefferson." One page, 19.5" x 15.75", New York, September 29, 1802. This passport, printed in English, French, Spanish, and Dutch authorizes passage of "John Bryan of New York master or commander of the Brig called the Welcome Return of the burthen 108 41/95 tons or thereabouts . . . bound for New Orleans and laden with Maize, Dry Goods, Candles, Hardware White, lead, Wine, Medicens, Barr Iron, Soap, Candles, Claret, Linnens, twine Red Oker, Chairs, & Boards." Countersigned by James Madison as secretary of state. Weakened folds show some separation at the edges. This document has been treated with cellulose acetate lamination, a restoration process popular in 1930s.
