Description

Thomas Jefferson Autograph Note Signed as President, 4.5" x 1", April 10, 1802, ordering payment be made for books he has purchased. In full: "will mr. Barnes be pleased to order paiment [sic] of the above (25.75) to mr Duties, bookseller Philada Th: Jefferson Apr. 10. 1802." The quintessential intellectual, Jefferson's many talents included architecture, agriculture, and philosophy. His diverse interests, of course, translated into an extensive library; likely one of the many contributing factors to his mounting debts. After leaving office, Jefferson would arrange for the sale of his books to the Government to become part of the Library of Congress. Another manifestation of Jefferson's love for books is the founding of the University of Virginia; the first University to be founded to be centered about a library and not a chapel. A great association holograph as president; closely trimmed, but bold and highly displayable.
