More Information:

Edwin Gardner served as a private during the Civil War. After his graduation from Harvard with an M.D. in 1875, he served as a surgeon in the military until this appointment. This document reads in part: "I [Theodore Roosevelt] do appoint him [Edwin F. Gardner] Deputy Surgeon General with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the service of the United States."
