Ronald Reagan Writes About His Mother's Death: "it was hard to feel sorrow because she herself always thought of death as going home"

Ronald Reagan Autograph Letter Signed "Dutch." One page, 8.5" x 11", Pacific Palisades; August 15, [1962]. A handwritten letter to Myrt and Norm, recounting the death of his mother Nelle. In part: "I'm sure you know how much of a place you had in Mother's heart. I thought you'd like to know how peaceful & without pain her passing was. As you know it's been a long time since she even recognized any of us. Then one day there was evidently a series of cerebral ruptures that just resulted in a sleep like coma & in a few hours she just quit breathing. You I know will understand when I say it was hard to feel sorrow because she herself always thought of death as going home. When my own tears came I actually felt guilty because I knew she was truly happy & at peace." Signed, "Dutch." Nelle Wilson Reagan (1883-1962) died of complications from Alzheimer's disease on July 25, 1962.

The letter is accompanied by the original transmittal envelope addressed in Reagan's hand to Mr. & Mrs. Norman Moon.

Condition: The letter has flattened folds and a spot of residue on the verso. The envelope has some loss of paper to the flap from when it was torn open, and creasing throughout.
