Description
Published Abraham Lincoln Autograph Endorsement Signed "A. Lincoln", Washington, D.C., September 28, 1861. Written on the back of a two page 8vo ALS in which Melancthon S. Wade offers his services to Secretary of War Simon Cameron, Lincoln's endorsement reads: "I think the case is sufficiently made for Gen'l Wade to be appointed". This brief statement is published in The Collected Works of Abraham Lincoln, Vol. IV by Roy P. Basler (New Brunswick, New Jersey: Rutgers University Press, 1953). A footnote below Basler's transcription gives the endorsement a provenance to "American Art Association Anderson Galleries catalog 3913, May 6, 1931". The Wade letter contains his offer to serve the Union as a brigadier general and is followed by five signed recommendations. His commission was granted on October 1, 1861 and he served until March, 1862. Preceding the Lincoln endorsement is one by Secretary Cameron, which reads, "Respectfully referred to the President". Smoothed mailing creases, toned throughout. The Lincoln panel is considerably darker than the others. Overall fine condition.Auction Info
