Presentation Copy of The White House: An Historic Guide Inscribed by Kennedy to the Loyal Military Aide That Accompanied His Body Back to DC After His Assassination
Presentation Copy of The White House: An Historic
Guide, Inscribed and Signed by John F. and Jacqueline
Kennedy. Washington, D.C.: White House Historical Association,
1962.Second Edition. Small 4to. LIMITED EDITION of seventy-five copies of which this is number 38a. Inscribed and signed by John F. Kennedy and Jacqueline Kennedy on the limitation page to his military aide, Godfrey McHugh, "To Godfrey McHugh with warm personal regards John Kennedy Jacqueline Kennedy Christmas 1962." The inscription and date are in the President's hand. Bound in full red leather, boards ruled in gilt, spine stamped in gilt, McHugh's initials "GTMcH" in gilt at the lower right corner of the front board, marbled endpapers.
As a military aide to the President, McHugh's duties included supervising Air Force One. He often rode in the middle of the front seat of the Presidential State Car. During the fateful trip to Dallas on November 22, 1963, McHugh was moved further back in the motorcade and was not in his usual place in the President's car. He remained in attendance during the autopsy, and guarded Kennedy's body on Air Force One until they returned to Washington, D.C.
Godfrey McHugh was born in Brussels, Belgium to American parents. McHugh joined the U.S. Army Air Forces after the U.S. entered World War II. He served as assistant executive and senior aide to Air Force Chief of Staff General Hoyt S. Vandenberg from 1948 to 1953. Interestingly, he briefly dated Jacqueline Bouvier before she married his future boss. In 1961, McHugh became Air Force Aide to President Kennedy and was promoted to brigadier general.
Commissioned by First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy to present to visitors to the Executive Mansion, The White House: An Historic Guide was an immediate success. Founded in 1961 as a part of First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy's program for restoring and teaching about the White House, the guide was the first publication of the association with Mrs. Kennedy actively participating in the editing. The book was designed to accompany guests touring the White House. Mrs. Kennedy was deeply committed to restoring the White House to its proper place amongst historic residences. The pictures and comprehensive descriptive text within the book attest to her success in this endeavor.
A wealth of drawings and photographs in this book give the reader a look at the interior of America's most famous house. Rooms and objects are described not only in terms of interesting furniture and pictures but also the human history that took place in each room during Presidential life. The White House Historical Association was established in 1961 as a non-profit organization to enhance the understanding, appreciation and enjoyment of the White House. For half a century, each First Lady has continued a tradition of involvement with the association.
Condition: Some rubbing of spine and minor scratches to the cover.
