Description

Millard Fillmore Steps In to Assist Evicted Tenants in a Property Dispute

Millard Fillmore Autograph Letter Signed ("Millard Fillmore"). One page, 7 5/8 x 9 3/4 inches; Buffalo, [New York]; January 6, 1844.

Fillmore reaches out to a landowner to request assistance in establishing fair sale terms to evicted tenants, the land having been sold by Fillmore to the correspondent previously. In full:

"Dear Sir,

One or two of the persons ejected by you have been in and enquired how they could purchase. I find on examining my power that I have no authority to sell, and they declined leasing. I could not inform them of your price or terms of payment. Neither Mr. Baldwin or myself kept a copy of his appraisal of the lands which I sold you. If you will write us and give me your prices for the several pieces, and your terms of payment, I will cheerfully aid you in making sales as the persons shall call.

Respectfully yours,
Millard Fillmore."

As a leading member of the Whig Party, Millard Fillmore placed the establishment of a national bank and the federal regulation of banking standards at the center of his ideology. Out of office and having recently lost the gubernatorial race, he turned his focus to Buffalo, strengthening his legal practice and cultivating relationships with like-minded civic leaders. As evidenced in the present letter, he also acted as a trusted intermediary between the public, financial institutions, and property owners.

Condition: Very good overall. Expected folds. Small blindstamp to the upper left corner. One small stain, paper lightly toned around the edges with minor wear, not affecting text.
